  • Prestigious independent Catholic school located on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, renowned for excellence in the education of young men.

College Overview

Over the past 10-15 years, St Augustine’s has grown its enrolment by roughly 30 percent and continued to build on its tradition of academic excellence — now ranking as the third-highest performing Catholic independent school in NSW for HSC results. St Augustine’s fosters an environment where technology enables rather than hinders learning experiences.

The Digital Learning Challenge

The college’s aging Wi-Fi infrastructure had become a significant barrier to digital learning innovation. Technical assessment revealed over 50% of access points were beyond end of life, with another 25% nearing obsolescence. This resulted in a compromised learning environment where students and teachers experienced frequent dropouts, slow performance, and frustrating connectivity issues when moving between classrooms.

“The overwhelming feedback from our 1,600 boys was ‘fix the Wi-Fi’. Teachers had to toggle their Wi-Fi on and off when moving to new classrooms just to reconnect,” says John Danson. “Poor Wi-Fi was undermining our teachers’ ability to use technology effectively int the classroom, limiting student engagement and learning opportunities”.

The Wi-Fi problems were particularly evident during high-density usage scenarios. Examination periods in the Brimstone Hall, which accommodates up to 250 students simultaneously, required deploying temporary Wi-Fi solutions on portable stands that often proved unreliable. The situation was similarly challenging in the Lecetto Auditorium, where up to 180 students would gather for learning activities, overwhelming the existing access points designed for standard classroom sizes of 30 students.

The Solution: Wi-Fi Designed for Educational Excellence

Following a comprehensive evaluation process, St Augustine’s College partnered with Digipro IT to implement a complete Wi-Fi infrastructure refresh using Juniper MIST AI-driven technology. The solution included high-performance access points with advanced monitoring capabilities, enabling precise diagnosis of connectivity issues across the campus, automatically resolving many potential issues.

“We wanted to go with someone we knew and trusted. Through previous services, we had confidence in Digipro IT’s expertise and professionalism. Our confidence was reinforced throughout the process,” explains Danson.

The solution was designed to provide four times faster connection speeds, eliminate dropouts, support seamless roaming between classrooms, and handle high-density usage scenarios like examinations and large group activities. The implementation included approximately 150 new access points strategically positioned throughout the campus, with particular attention to high-traffic and high-density areas.

Implementation

Digipro IT worked closely with the college to execute a carefully planned deployment during the Christmas school holidays. This timing minimised disruption to teaching and learning activities. The project involved replacing 150 access points across the campus, with clear delineation of responsibilities between Digipro IT’s technical expertise and the college’s internal resources.

“What really impressed me with Digipro IT was their focus on customer success. They stayed on to help us work through peripheral issues to ensure our Wi-Fi experience met expectations, going beyond what the contract required,” notes Danson. “There were no barriers to getting in contact with them when issues arose affecting users. The free flow of information between our technical teams to resolve issues without commercial or contractual barriers getting in the way was a refreshing experience.”

The implementation approach featured a collaborative model where Digipro IT handled the technical configuration and system integration, while the college’s maintenance staff and contracted electricians managed physical installation aspects. This partnership approach optimised costs while ensuring technical excellence.

The Benefits: Unleashing Digital Learning Capabilities

The new Wi-Fi removes the last connectivity hurdle, letting teachers and students use digital learning technologies without disruption. Key improvements include:

  • Significantly faster connection speeds – “approximately four times faster” than the previous system.
  • Dramatically reduced dropouts, providing consistent connectivity across the campus.
  • Seamless roaming between classrooms without requiring manual reconnection.
  • Enhanced monitoring and troubleshooting capabilities through Juniper’s comprehensive management platform.
  • Simplified guest access system that provides a “Qantas Club-like experience” for visitors.
  • Improved examination capabilities supporting up to 250 students simultaneously without temporary solutions.

“Now teachers can use modern apps, digital learning technologies, interactive online quizzes, assessments, and educational videos in the classroom without interruption. Before, these wouldn’t work because of stuttering and dropouts – now all those things work,” states Danson.

The solution has also delivered unexpected benefits. The monitoring capabilities provide valuable insights into campus population density and movement patterns throughout the day. This data helps with resource allocation and space utilisation planning. Additionally, the system can assist in locating students who may be missing from class, enhancing campus safety and supervision capabilities.

Ongoing Strategic Technology Partnership

Following the success of the Wi-Fi refresh, St Augustine’s College has engaged Digipro IT through a network managed service contract for ongoing support, maintenance, and continuous service improvements. This partnership ensures the college’s technology infrastructure continues to support its educational mission effectively.

The Wi-Fi infrastructure project has created a solid foundation for the college’s broader technology transformation initiatives, which include implementing a new parent portal supported by modern digital workflows, building integration capabilities between systems, enhancing business intelligence, and deploying a new student online safety platform. With reliable connectivity now established across the campus, St Augustine’s is well-positioned to advance its digital learning strategies and enhance the educational experience for students and staff alike.
